The Accession Number Nobody Reads

The accession tag under each work — an artist name, a material list, a year, a code — is inherited straight from museum registrar practice, where it exists so an institution can track a piece across decades of loans, conservation, and changing ownership.

We’re a small commercial space, not a museum, so strictly we don’t need it. We keep the discipline anyway, because it’s a quiet way of telling a visitor: we intend for this to still matter in twenty years, not just for this one show.
