The word grotesque comes from grottesca — the Renaissance decorators who found strange half-human, half-plant ornament painted on the walls of buried Roman rooms and imitated it, not because they misunderstood beauty but because they’d found a category next to it.
We use the word in the same spirit. Every artist on Grotto’s roster can paint or cast or weave a conventionally beautiful object. They choose not to, on purpose, because the uncomfortable version tells you something the beautiful one doesn’t.
