We turn down more work than we hang, and the reasons are almost never squeamishness. What we decline, consistently, is work whose only idea is ‘this will disturb you’ — no material argument, no formal risk, just the assumption that discomfort is itself the achievement.
The artists we do show — Auerbach, Vasquez-Lindqvist, Okonkwo-Bell, Halvorsen — are all doing something more specific than that, and it’s usually visible in under a minute if you look at the material rather than the subject.
